There are lots of things to do in Budapest in the summer.

There are lots of things to do in Budapest in the summer.

Summer can be scorching hot in Budapest, especially in the city center where the buildings and pavement encase the heat, with temperatures reaching over 30°C/86°F. So what to do in Budapest in the summer? It’s time to slow down and cool off by the water.

Aquaworld

In the northern suburbs of Budapest, Aquaworld is the city’s most popular destination for family fun while escaping the heat. It’s one of the biggest water parks in central Europe, with wave pools, water slides, a playground for kids and a spa for weary parents. In summer a free shuttle bus runs daily between Heroes’ Square and the resort. Entry is discounted with the Budapest Card.

Beaches

No natural beaches? No problem, Budapest has created its own. Sun worshippers can enjoy artificial beaches at Raktár and Palatinus on Margaret Island, the water slides at Ramai Beach and gay-friendly Csillaghegyi on the way out to the arty village of Szentendre.

Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton is perfect for summer family vacations.

An hour’s drive from Budapest, the southern shore of Lake Balaton has family resorts lining its beaches as well as the clubbing capital of Siófok for teenagers. There’s plenty to see along its northern shore, from the Herend porcelain factory to the Baroque abbey and wildlife reserve on Tihany Peninsula to the spa town of Balatonfüred. The lake is safe for swimming; most beaches charge a small fee for entrance. Family activities include sailing, water skiing, surfing, cycling and jogging.

Margaret Island

Margaret Island is a perfect respite from the heat of the city. In addition to its beaches, it boasts an open-air theater that re-opens its doors for a summer-long schedule of classical concerts and drama during the Budapest Summer Festival. The island also has shady jogging routes, plenty of parks for people watching, swimming pools and a water park for kids.

Summer fun at Szechenyi thermal baths in Budapest

The outdoor pools at Budapest’s thermal baths are open all summer, with towels, robes, slippers and soap provided. Dagàly baths have great facilities for children, including a wave pool, adventure pool and lazy river, plus it offers swimming lessons. Széchenyi is another smart family choice, with outdoor pools, whirlpools and Jacuzzis. Rudas baths are largely men-only during the week, and no one under the age of 14 is allowed.
